Rajiv Gandhi aviation academy to get new building soon

Thiruvananthapuram: The foundation stone laying ceremony of a new academy complex for the Rajiv Gandhi Academy for Aviation Technology will be held on March 28. “The state government has sanctioned Rs 1 crore and advance has been paid to BSNL’s civil engineering wing to undertake the construction,” said V Thulasidas, executive vice-chairman of the academy.

The academy’s building and hangar had to be demolished for the construction of the new terminal and Air India Engineering Base in the airport. Classes are held in a rented building outside the airport and the aircraft are parked in a temporary hangar within the airport. “Government of Kerala has allotted 2.71 acres of land to the academy at Chackai near Air India Engineering Base. The new academy complex will be built on this land near Air India Hangar, ITI Junction, Chackai,” said Thulasidas.
The new complex will have a hangar, which can accommodate eight single-engine aircraft and one twin-engine aircraft, a fuel store and the four-storied academy building. With the completion of this complex, the academy will be able to commence new training courses such as full aircraft maintenance engineering course, BSc aviation course for CPL & AME, cabin crew training and flight dispatcher course.
