Shortage of commanders not trained pilots: Ajit Singh

New Delhi: The government today said there was no shortage of trained pilots in the country but steps were being taken to overcome the scarcity of ‘type-rated’ Commanders.

“There is no shortage of trained pilots. However, there is a shortage of type-rated commanders in the country,” Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh said in response to a question in the Lok Sabha.
Singh said that “to meet the shortage, Foreign Aircrew Temporary Authorisation (FATA) policy has been reviewed. FATA policy provides for extension upto December 31, 2013, on case- to-case basis,”Singh said.
In response to another question, Singh said the Aviation Turbine Fuel prices in India were higher as compared to prices in other countries.

  1. instead of fata why aviation minister doesnt sent non type rated commanders for type rating and must give chance for freshers cpl holder in aviation sector , in this way they can provide job for nonemployee pilot.i wish he would read and thing on this.

  2. @kishor dase:the question is rather why should aviation minister send a non type rated co pilots for type training costing around 30 lakh and above spending taxpayers money????

when a son of a rich dad can afford to spend 30-40 lakh for pilot training ,let him spend some more money for type rating too…..

  3. DGCA must work-out stategy to provide better grounds for Type-rated trainings and inculcate a transparent, fastrack and honest proceedings over the examinations and selections.

    1. Job vacancies must be timely released.
    2. Sponsorships or On-loan trainings must be facilitated in India(to deserving candidates who can be chosen through a proper aptitude test and economic background based selection).
    3. Modern equipments must be provide in trainning institutes under strict surviliance of DGCA and IATA.

  4. AI is bankrupt. If they send Commanders for type rating they will shut down even faster. No right thinking Indian Capt would leave another airline to join this sinking ship.

This leaves only one option. Get the 1st officers with ATPLs and who have requisite QRs to upgrade onto left hand seat with internal training. At company’s discreation QRs could be reduced. That way the right hand seat could accomodate fresh CPL pilots.
